Ukraine and Russia Trade Record Strikes as NATO Downs Drone Over Romania

Russia and Ukraine traded some of their largest strikes of the month overnight into Sunday: Russian ballistic missiles hit Kryvyi Rih’s ArcelorMittal steel plant and Kremenchuk, killing at least 3 nationwide, while Ukraine launched hundreds of drones at Russia, prompting a NATO F-18 to shoot down a Russian-origin drone over Romania — the 4th such incursion this year. On Iran, USS George Washington is en route to relieve the crisis-strained USS Abraham Lincoln, while Iran’s military flatly rejected US claims that ships pass Hormuz freely. Russian losses reached 1,468,760 (+1,440).

⚠️ 72-hour watch: Whether the Kryvyi Rih/Kremenchuk ballistic strikes and the record Moscow-area drone raid mark a sustained escalation in both sides’ strike tempo; whether the carrier handover in the Gulf changes naval posture around Hormuz in any visible way; and whether Iran’s rejection of the ‘free passage’ narrative is followed by any new shipping incident.

Full briefing

Sunday into Monday saw one of the heaviest exchanges of the month. Russia’s Defence Ministry said it targeted a metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and several military-industrial sites in Kyiv, including a facility it claimed manufactures Ukraine’s Flamingo missiles; ballistic missiles also struck Kremenchuk. Zelensky said two people were killed in Kryvyi Rih and one in Sumy, with 13 ArcelorMittal steel workers injured. Ukraine did not intercept any of the ballistic missiles fired at it overnight, again highlighting its short supply of interceptors. Ukraine’s own barrage was described by Russian state media as its largest since the start of the year: hundreds of drones targeted the Moscow area, and a Russian-origin drone that crossed from Moldova was shot down over Romania by a Spanish F-18 on NATO air-policing duty — the fourth such incursion into Romanian airspace this year. On Iran, the naval posture shifted: the USS George Washington, which departed Vietnam Aug 12, is heading to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln after a record 260+ days at sea amid a crew mental-health crisis. Iran’s military publicly rejected US claims that shipping now passes Hormuz freely, insisting no vessel transits without Tehran’s permission. Russian combat losses reached 1,468,760 as of the Aug 17 report (+1,440).
