Energy is now the battlefield in both wars

Energy is now the battlefield in both wars. Russia is striking Ukraine’s grid and Kyiv’s bridges ahead of winter — a Poltava-region strike cut power to 22,000 customers late on Oct 4 — while Kyiv says its own campaign has disabled 51% of Russian refining. In the Gulf, at least four tankers have been hit near Hormuz since Oct 1, the Houthis claimed a strike on an Aramco refinery, and the G7 is releasing 100 million barrels to hold prices. Trump says he is ‘approaching a decision’ on Iran with a third carrier group on the way. Russian losses stand at 1,542,720 (+2,020) as of Oct 5; Brent settled at $102.25 on Oct 2.

⚠️ 72-hour watch: Further strikes on Ukraine’s grid and Kyiv’s bridges; the Oct 5 General Staff count; Ukrainian refinery strikes; Trump’s Iran decision; tanker strikes and UKMTO’s tally; Houthi fire at Saudi energy sites; and Brent after the G7 release.

Full briefing

Both conflicts are being fought over fuel and power as much as territory. In Ukraine, Zelensky says Putin has approved a ‘new doctrine’ of wider winter strikes on infrastructure, and the pattern is visible: drones have hit Kyiv’s Southern or Northern bridge on four consecutive days, a 135-drone raid on Oct 4 killed at least 5, and late that night a drone strike on a Poltava-region energy facility cut power to about 22,000 customers while a double-tap Banderol strike on Kharkiv killed 1 and injured 6 — Kyiv Independent, Ukrinform. Kyiv is answering in kind. The Defence Ministry says 51% of Russian refining capacity is disabled, the FP-7 ballistic missile saw first combat use on Oct 1, and the SBU says it hit a Su-35 and a Su-34 in Adygea on Oct 4; Germany’s €1.3 billion package funds interceptor drones and IRIS-T missiles, and Zelensky said a German-Ukrainian SPYS interceptor passed a test against the jet drones Ukraine downs only about 57% of the time. Washington is proposing a technical-level trilateral meeting by the end of October. In the Gulf the strait stays shut: Iran’s chief negotiator Ghalibaf said on Oct 4 it ‘will not open until our seven conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum are met,’ UKMTO has logged at least four tanker strikes since Oct 1, and the Houthis claimed a strike on Aramco’s Riyadh refinery as Saudi-backed Yemeni forces opened an offensive. Trump said on Oct 3 he is ‘approaching a decision on Iran’ after Vice President Vance chaired a Camp David meeting, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt group is deploying — Al Jazeera, Iran International. The G7 agreed to release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel and OPEC+ held November quotas; Brent settled at $102.25 on Oct 2. Elsewhere, Ethiopian federal forces and the allied Tigray Peace Forces hold Mekelle after the TPLF said it had temporarily moved out — TimesLive, Al Jazeera. Ukraine’s General Staff puts Russian losses at 1,542,720 (+2,020) as of Oct 5, with September’s 46,230 the highest month of 2026. A 205-drone raid into Oct 5 (172 downed) left 5 dead and 61 injured nationwide, and Germany’s BND chief warned on Oct 5 that Russia is waging a shadow war against Germany — Kyiv Independent.
